Ruby Bridges is an American activist, author and historical figure. Born on September 14, 1954, Ruby Bridges enrolled at the age of 6 in William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. This event is considered one of the turning points in the process of desegregation (the end of racial segregation) in American history.

In 1960, Ruby Bridges participated in the integration process, which took a historic turn when the United States Supreme Court ruled in Brown v. Board of Education that the practice of separate schools for black and white students had to end. However, the majority of White Americans, opposed to a Black student attending a white school, organized protests to prevent Ruby Bridges from attending school.

In the process, Ruby Bridges spent several months being escorted by teachers, federal police officers and security guards to attend a White school, where she was taught in a classroom set up just for her. As a result, Ruby endured a difficult period in which not only she, but also her family, was subjected to threats and attacks.

Ruby Bridges’ struggle is symbolic for the end of racial segregation and equality in education in America. Ruby went on to further her education, graduating from college and working as a teacher. She also wrote a book about her life story, “Ruby Bridges Goes to School: My True Story”, which tells her life story. Ruby Bridges is recognized as a figure who inspires many with her courage and dedication.
