Thank you for the recipe! I'm going to make them for my sweet friend who is due any day.

  4. soo good – gonna try dried cranberries and nuts in them along with Dark Choc chips this time. Did notice more milk when eating. Also was worried I had cut back too much on my calorie in take while nursing which was hurting my supply. These cookies help there too.

The cookies in the photo have butterscotch chips instead of chocolate. They're like lactation oatmeal scotchies…. and they are SOOOOOO good. Krista's recipe is delicious! My whole family likes them.

    Just a quick note:
I altered this recipe a bit to give it less sugar and more punch. I took out 1/4 c of both types of sugar for a 1/2 c decrease in sugar. I also doubled both the flax and the brewer's yeast.
They didn't taste any different as far as I could tell.

I decreased the sugar too and it was fine. I've also tried it with all whole wheat, they ended up super heavy and like hockey pucks. Don't recommend trying that.

Hey, can you get Brewer’s Yeast any any common grocery? My friend just had her baby and I wanted to make her a sweet yet supportive snack! :o)

I received a similar recipe from a great friend of mine about a month ago. Instead of using 1 cup butter, I halve the butter and sub in applesauce for the rest. I also like to throw in whatever else I have on hand besides these “called for” ingredients. I usually throw in a handful of sunflower seeds, craisin’s, raisins (or golden raisins).

About the sub question on yeasts: Best to stick with the Brewers yeast. Bakers yeast is great for breads, etc. Brewer’s Yeast has been proven to increase lactation (that’s why some older gen’s mention BFing Mama’s having a beer once in a while. Because it contains Brewers yeast with increases milk production. I don’t not know if Baker’s yeast does the same. bt they are completely different kinds of yeast).

    Jessica,
I use 1 1/3 c of white flour and 2/3 c of whole wheat. It doesn’t make them any heavier, but ups the healthy factor just a bit.

I finally found brewer’s yeast at my grocery store in the health food section. I didn’t know it was there. (oops :S) I’m going to do a lot of my shopping from that section now. 🙂

I finished breastfeeding 8 months ago and I still have milk in my boobies..Now I know why.. I eat a lot of oat flakes and flux seed (part of my breakfast and I also add them to rolls I bake).

About how many cookies does this make? – If it’s too much at once, at least it can be halved! 😉

Here is the recipe I use. I have made them for a cousin who had a baby and for our local La Leche League group.
    Major Milk Makin’ Cookies
    Recipe by Kathleen Major
Detailed recipe with photos found here
1 1/2 c. whole wheat flour (I use a gluten free mix with xanthan gum added)
    1 3/4 c. oats
    1 tsp baking soda
    1 tsp salt
3/4 c. almond butter or peanut butter
1/2 c. butter, softened (accidentally used 1 cup last time and they were delish!)
    1 c. flax
    3 T brewer’s yeast
    1/3 c. water
    1 tsp cinnamon
    1/2 c. sugar
    1/2 c. brown sugar
    2 tsp vanilla
    2 large eggs
    2 c. (12oz) chocolate chips
1 c. chopped nuts of your choice (didn’t use)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit
Combine flour, baking soda, cinnamon and salt in a bowl.
In a large bowl, beat almond butter, butter, sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, brewer’s yeast, flax and water until creamy.
    Mix in eggs.
    Gradually beat in flour mixture.
Mix in nuts and chocolate chips.
Add oats slowly, mixing along the way.
Place balls of dough onto greased baking sheets or baking stones.
Press down each ball lightly with a fork.
    Bake 12 minutes.

I think I need to make some more soon. 😉

Looking forward to trying these. I don’t seem to have a supply issue but I figured if I was going to be eating cookies may as well make them healthier and promote good milk production. 🙂 Anyone know if nutritional yeast is the same as brewers yeast or at least just as functional? I’m having a hard time finding specifically brewers yeast, in bulk. Thanks.

When I went at a local grocery winco which has a big bulk food section the worker there told me ‘Nutritional yeast’ is the same ad brewers yeast. I then googled it while some say they have very similar nutrition they are not the same. I ended up ordering online – try amazon – abt $14 for 1 lb shipped or $25 for 2 lbs. I bought 2 lbs coz ppl say u could add the brewers yeast to yogurt or oatmeal etc – I’d think that would help make even more milk!

Brewers yeast is the only kind of yeast that should be used, none of the other kinds will work. Also, it can be found for sure at GNC and possibly Vitamin World or if your supermarket has a really good health food section.
