Speed bumps on a major 4lane hwy? I sure hope you’re joking. If not, that’s a level duct tape can’t fix. Most wrecks at this intersection has been the fault of the 196 driver. I’ve witnessed multiple drivers not stop at the stop sign and try to speed across 29. Some have made it. Some haven’t. The speed of the driver on 29 is irrelevant. 40 or 140, doesn’t matter. If you cannot judge speed and distance of the other driver. Then don’t pull out in front of them. If you can’t. Then you shouldn’t be driving.

Until you figure out how to fix stupid there are going to be senseless accidents on highway 29. I have been traveling highway 29 between McDavid and Pensacola almost daily for the past 6 months and see so many accidents and near misses. Example, I was behind a tractor trailer going north on 29, about 5 lengths behind him, 65 mph speed limit, no other vehicles around and I saw a small SUV at a side road and the driver pulled right out in front of the truck. I heard his Jake brake and pulled back so he could move to the center lane to avoid the SUV because the driver hadn’t picked up enough speed to avoid being hit. We passed the lady who was oblivious to the fact that she had just missed becoming a greasy spot on hwy 29. People LATE WON’T KILL YOU or your loved ones in your vehicle.

Come on people. No more redlights. (how did that work for you at Atmore cut off) Like someone said, I’ve been through that intersection thousands of times, with no accident. Red lights are to aid the flow of traffic. There are hundreds of accidents in Escambia County. 90% are from careless driving. Don’t penalize the traffic flow because people are careless drivers.

We do not need another light at 196. Just look at atmore cutoff and 29 in molino. There’s a light and still numerous accidents happen constantly.

    One word: Round-A-Bout

    Maybe that’s three words.

Please no more traffic lights. With more and more people moving north, there is going to be more traffic. Putting up lights to slow people down will only compound the problem. You can put a light at every intersection and hang a camera on every pine tree from Pensacola to the state line, and people are still going to have accidents. The biggest problem is people are not attentive to the task of driving. There are too many things that can cause us to lose focus on the road and our surroundings.

Ok a traffic light is not going to solve this issue. Maybe at night we can add some lights for illumination. The other issue is people need to slow down. This accident was completely avoidable. Speed, inexperience and showing off for friends was the cause in this accident.

I guess I should feel lucky. Been thru that intersection a 1000 times, never had a close call.

  10. Neighbor onJune 12th, 2024 4:06 pm

@Reader…good enough, but they need to be lobbied in some way, to help with this problem, that is not a new one.Whether more lights or more Troopers. What’s cheaper, a light, 3 Troopers, or the life of your wife, son, daughter, mother or father, or any other life. Just sayin.

“Why CAN’T we have a light there? County Commissioners don’t want to approve one?”

It’s a state road. County commissioners can’t put a light there without the state.

  12. Neighbor onJune 12th, 2024 3:35 pm

Y’all that don’t think a light might help, consider this. At night any of the crossroads or intersections I mentioned are virtually invisable. At least a light being there; green, yellow or red, will alert the idiot that is doing 85mph that’s there is something there to consider, and the man or woman taking off on their light has a chance.

And by the way…Why CAN’T we have a light there? County Commissioners don’t want to approve one? Vote in ones that will consider our safety. Too bad if that is a bit inconvenient for the idiot doing 85! Can’t fix stupid, I say.

    @David
only overpass bridge that was EVER NEEDED on 29 should have been over the RAILROAD TRACKS at the papermill back in the 1950’s to

  14. DRD onJune 12th, 2024 2:07 pm

There are enough power poles between Cantonment and the state line. They need to put up a few cameras to catch speeders. When enough people get speeding tickets with their picture in the mail Mabe people will slow down.

  15. Eric M onJune 12th, 2024 12:09 pm

@neighbor… let’s out a traffic light at every single intersection on hwy 29. That way, there will be no more accidents, ever.

Seriously though, nothing will stop people from not paying attention to the road. If traffic lights worked, there’d be no more accidents at 29/97. But as we all know, there are a least a couple a week there.

  16. Kevin in Bratt onJune 12th, 2024 12:05 pm

With the speeding down US 29 from Century to Cantonment FDOT
may as well put a traffic light at every intersection to slow people down (sarcasm of course) but speed kills and it’s usually the one who’s obeying the speed limits that’s gets injured.

    CONCERNING:
“we can’t add another red light”

which way should the overpass go?

  18. Bill T onJune 12th, 2024 9:32 am

I hope everyone is okay !! But unfortunately we can’t add another red light so I guess people need to learn to drive more safely !! What get me is there are people out there that want to blame everything but the drivers !!!

We all can see the number of accidents that happen at this intersection, some fatal, and it should be obvious something needs to be done. I’ve lived right there for 10 years and have seen or nearly been involved in several. A light there might help. It may not be the only thing the area needs though. Consider this. With the light at Molino Rd, one at 196, another at Quintette, and another at Neal perhaps, it might allow for conditioning of drivers to not go as fast on 29 as they do. With a distance to run out there before needing to stop it is easy to do above the 65mph speed limit. Reaction times are reduced and clearly more accidents happen. With more stop lights it conditions one for slowing, also allowing drivers to be alerted better to crossing roads Just an idea.

Praising OUR GOD that there were no serious injuries. This could have been much worse. Not going to even speculate on what caused this other than human error. I’m sure there will be plenty who do that for me. I’m just glad everyone is going to be okay.
