Nasty Patty:

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Concerning SpongeBob's complicity with Mr. Krabs' poisoning attempt on the health inspector, is he genuinely displaying some out-of-character sadism and crossing the Moral Event Horizon or is he just blindly loyal to Mr. Krabs as he usually is?

SpongeBob: It doesn't seem right... but it feels so good!

    • Did Mr. Krabs intend for the patty to kill him all along and suddenly felt guilty when it actually did seem to do the job, or did he just want the supposedly fake health inspector to get temporarily sick from the disgusting patty? Was he genuinely remorseful when the health inspector seemingly died or was he just worried he'd get caught?
    • Even though the health inspector turned out to be the genuine article, there's debate over his character. Was he an innocent guy just doing his job? Or was he taking advantage of his position to get free meals?
  • The Catchphrase Catches On: The word "smeckledorf", made up for a Perfectly Cromulent Word gag, went on to see use in the real world as a synonym for tricking someone.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: The basic premise alone is pretty dark for an episode that premiered back when the show was rated TV-Y, but the episode is so full of hilarious black comedy that it rides to the line and back. Especially since we know the health inspector is alive while SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs don't.
  • Franchise Original Sin: Mr. Krabs is shown to be willing to serve a man a "nasty patty" that would realistically give him a bad case of food poisoning at the very least. However, this is meant to be non-standard behavior from him: it was prompted by a mistaken belief that he was a con artist posing as a health inspector to trick restaurants into giving him free food, and he's almost immediately remorseful on seeing what he thinks are the results of his handiwork. Later episodes would have him indulge in cruelty that was just as bad or even worse (such as when he psychologically tortures a business rival with the heavily implied intent of driving him to insanity or even suicide) with far less (real or perceived) provocation and absolutely no regret beyond fear of potential negative consequences for him.
  • Nausea Fuel: Good luck trying to get that closeup of the Nasty Patty out of your head.

Idiot Box:

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: As it's left unexplained as to how SpongeBob and Patrick were making realistic sound effects in the box, it's entirely possible that Squidward did have an imagination — and all the sounds were his imagination playing tricks on him.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Squidward thinking he accidentally caused SpongeBob and Patrick to get mauled by an avalanche? A little disheartening. Him seemingly causing a second avalanche just by tapping the box? Hilarious!
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Squidward wants to be taken to Robot-Pirate Island. Eight months after this episode aired, Disney did just that.
    • When taking a sombrero out of a hat box, Squidward questions why he hasn't worn it yet. 32 episodes later, and he would wear a sombrero, albeit getting mauled by a sea bear in the process.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • The image of SpongeBob creating a rainbow with his hands has been used with the words "Nobody Cares" superimposed over it on many message boards.
    • "I couldn't afford a present this year, so I got you this box."Explanation
  • Unintentional Period Piece: This episode could only have been made at a time when the typical TV set was both large-screened enough and bulky enough that people could conceivably fit inside the box it came in... so, the early 2000s.
